What Can Cause A Dryer Fire?

dryer vent cleaning

Dryer fires are primarily caused by a combination of lint buildup and a malfunctioning or poorly maintained dryer. Here are the key factors that contribute to dryer fires:

1.Lint Buildup: Lint from clothes accumulates in the lint trap, dryer vent, and exhaust duct. Since lint is highly flammable, if it accumulates in the dryer or vent system, it can easily ignite when exposed to the dryer’s heat.

2.Blocked Ventilation: A clogged or blocked dryer vent restricts airflow, causing the dryer to overheat. When the dryer overheats, the risk of a fire increases, particularly if lint buildup is present.

3.Failure to Clean the Dryer: Not regularly cleaning the lint filter, vent system, or dryer drum allows lint and debris to accumulate. Over time, this can create a serious fire hazard.

4.Overloading the Dryer: Putting too many clothes in the dryer can cause the machine to work harder than it should, leading to overheating. Overheating combined with lint buildup can easily start a fire.

5.Dryer Malfunctions: Faulty thermostats, heating elements, or other dryer components can cause the dryer to overheat. If these parts fail and the dryer continues to run at unsafe temperatures, the risk of a fire increases.

6.Improper Installation: Poorly installed dryer vents, such as those with too many bends or made from non-recommended materials (like plastic or foil), can trap lint and obstruct airflow, leading to overheating and fire hazards.

7.Drying Flammable Items: Some items, like rubber, plastic, or anything with chemicals (like cleaning rags or oily clothes), can ignite in the dryer. Even if these items are washed, residue can remain and become a fire risk.

8.Neglecting Regular Maintenance: Failing to schedule professional inspections and cleanings can allow issues like lint buildup, faulty wiring, or worn-out parts to go unnoticed, increasing the fire risk.

 9. Nest made by birds and rodents– birds and rodents like warm areas to make nest, especially during the winter months.  Make sure your dryer vent is cleaned annually and ensure there is a bird/rodent cover installed at the exterior termination.

 10. Improper transition duct. Most have UL181 transition ducts which are not what manufacturers recommend. Current recommendations are UL-2158a
