When was the last time you looked behind your dryer? Most homeowners never think about the short flexible duct that connects the dryer to the wall — called the transition duct. But that small piece of material can make a big difference in fire safety and code compliance.
The Problem: Outdated or Unsafe Dryer Ducts
For years, many homeowners (and even contractors) used UL 181 aluminum foil or plastic flex duct for dryer connections. These materials were commonly labeled for ‘general HVAC use’ — not specifically for dryers.
While UL 181 flex duct was fine for moving air in heating and cooling systems, it was never designed for the high heat and lint buildup that occurs with dryers. The result is increased risk of dryer fires, lint accumulation, restricted airflow, and in some cases, the foil material can even melt or ignite.
If your dryer vent uses thin foil or plastic ducting, it’s time to upgrade to a safer alternative. Contact us today!
