Your Home’s Routine Maintenance

Your Home’s Routine Maintenance

Owning a home requires regular maintenance care on a number of things in your home. With so many things to care for, it’s sometimes hard to keep track of HOW frequently things should be done. So let’s get into the down and dirty of frequency for your air duct cleaning, dryer vent cleaning and chimney cleaning.

How often should I have my air ducts cleaned?

A good rule of thumb is to clean your ducts every three to five years according to the National Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA) This is the minimum, as this is the length of time that it can take for your air ducts to fill back up with dirt, dust and other debris after a thorough cleaning. However, some homes may require more frequent cleanings. According to NADCA, you may want to have your air ducts cleaned more frequently if you:

  • Live in an older home
  • Have pets
  • Have someone with respiratory illness at home
  • Have allergies or live with someone with allergies
  • Have a problem with dust
  • Have a smoker in the home.

How often should I have my dryer vent cleaned?

Dryer vents should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year depending on the size of the household and dryer usage. This once a year inspection and cleaning could be a life saving expense. Dryer vents accumulate highly flammable lint, and failure to clean out the lint is the leading cause of dryer fires. According to the national fire protection agency, more than 15,000 dryer fires occurred in the United States. A telltale sign that you need a dryer vent cleaning is your clothes are taking longer and longer to dry.

How often should you clean Chimneys ?

According to the national fire protection agency, chimneys and fireplaces shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, correct clearances and freedom from deposits. Cleaning, maintenance and repairs should be completed as needed, which is often determined by frequency of us as well as other factors. For example, if you use your fireplace frequently, your chimney must be cleaned more often. Another example that would require cleaning is if an animal builds a nest in the flue. The best way to know is to maintain a maintenance inspection annually with a certified company.
