Why Are My Vent / Register Covers Dripping During the Winter Months?

vent dripping during winter

We often hear this question and it is an easy fix! Most believe that condensation can only happen in the summer when cold air is being used to cool your home through your HVAC system, but that’s not the case. Sweating/condensation can also happen in the winter. As long as hot air is meeting cold air, condensation can occur.

The most common set up for this to happen is when you have baseboard heat, a radiator or a heating source that does not utilize the AC system. These AC systems are typically found in your attic and are not ran during the winter.

So what happens next?

The heat from your home rises into the vents and into the ductwork in your attic. This ductwork is very cold during the winter months, so when the hot air hits the cold ducts condensation forms. This water then trickles down your sublines and drips into occupied spaces through your vents.

The Fix….

You can close your ceiling vents and/or purchase magnetic vent covers cover the vents. If the vent is plastic or you do not want to purchase covers, you may remove the vent cover and tape the backside of the vent closed with a tempered foil tape. This will help prevent the hot air from getting
into the attic unit, cutting down on the condensation.

this could cause damage to your system.
