How do I prevent birds from nesting in my dryer vent exhaust this Spring?

As much as you love having birds around your property, they can cause serious issues when it comes to your dryer vents and exhaust fans. They also have a habit of returning to the same place year after year!

Birds are nesting this time of year and open vents are a perfect environment. They use the lint to build their nests and the warmth of the dryer makes it extra cozy. Unfortunately, this can be a dangerous fire hazard.

The nest is usually located at the opening of the line but sometimes it does get lodged deeper. Blockages are common. If the bird perishes inside the line, it is also unhealthy. How do you know you have a birds nest? Take a look at the outside vent cover! Straw, twigs, leaves and lint could be visible. Your clothes might take longer to dry. You might even hear the bird tweeting!

The line must be cleared, cleaned and sanitized to return it to peak performance. You should consider a suitable bird guard permanently placed on the outside of the vent to discourage all birds and small animals from entering the line. Be careful if you decide to make this a DYI project. Screen is just as dangerous you cannot block the ventilation.

Call Advanced Furnace & Air Duct Cleaning to set up a cleaning and to have a suitable bird guard installed. Be wary of those so called professional cleaners who claim to use proper techniques. Dryers should be cleaned from the back of the dryer to the vent outside your home with equipment strong enough to remove lodged items.
