Why One Room Is Always Colder Or Hotter Than the Rest of the House

Why One Room Is Always Colder Or Hotter Than the Rest of the House

You turn up the thermostat, but one bedroom still feels cold while the rest of the house is comfortable. That difference can come from the ductwork, the room itself, or the heating system. Finding the cause matters: sealing a duct leak may help a room that receives too little warm air, while a drafty window or missing insulation calls for a different fix

Warm Air May be Escaping Before it Reaches the Room

A loose connection or gap in a supply duct can release heated air into an attic, crawlspace, or other unfinished area. The furnace may be working normally, but less air reaches the cold room. This is especially worth checking when the room is at the end of a long duct run or a branch passes through an unconditioned space.

ENERGY STAR estimates that, in a typical home, 20% to 30% of the air moving through the ducts is lost through leaks, holes, and poor connections. A duct leakage assessment can show whether sealing would address the problem. Accessible joints may be sealed by hand; Aeroseal can reach many hidden leaks from inside the duct system. A disconnected or crushed duct needs physical repair.

The Duct May be Intact but Poorly Insulated

Even when air stays inside a duct, it can lose heat while traveling through a cold attic or crawlspace. By the time it reaches a distant register, the air may feel cooler. Checking the condition of duct insulation is part of understanding why one room lags behind the others. Sealing stops air loss; insulation limits heat transfer. Some homes need both.

Airflow Into and Out of the Room May be Limited

A closed or blocked supply register, a kinked flexible duct, or an undersized duct branch can reduce the air delivered to one space. The return path matters too: when a closed door leaves the room with no adequate way for air to flow back to the system, comfort can suffer. ENERGY STAR recommends that duct improvement contractors inspect the whole system and evaluate the balance of supply and return air.

Before arranging work, check that furniture and rugs are not covering registers and that the system filter is in good condition. Avoid assuming that closing several other registers will redirect enough air to solve the problem; the underlying airflow issue still needs to be identified.

The Room Itself May be Losing Heat

A room over a garage, below a poorly insulated attic, or beside drafty windows can cool faster than neighboring rooms. Sun exposure, exterior walls, and insulation also affect how a space feels. ENERGY STAR lists attic and crawlspace air leaks, insulation, and duct problems among the possible causes of uneven room temperatures. A duct repair will not make up for major heat loss through the room’s walls or ceiling.

What a Useful Evaluation Should Include

Start by noting when the room feels cold: only during very cold weather, whenever the door is shut, or every time the heat runs. A professional can then inspect the supply and return path, check the condition of accessible ducts and insulation, measure airflow and leakage where appropriate, and look for signs that the heating equipment needs service. If the equipment or system design is the issue, an HVAC contractor may need to assess it.

For homes with gas or oil-burning appliances, duct changes also call for attention to combustion safety. ENERGY STAR advises contractors to check for backdrafting after sealing work. The goal is a room that receives the right amount of heated air without creating another problem elsewhere in the house.
